Review of the bookmaker Smarkets from Legalbet

Smarkets is a sports betting company which was founded in 2008 and is primarily a betting exchange. They are a challenger to the market leader Betfair, and with a base rate of just 2% commission, Smarkets has been catching them up quickly. (A pure Sportsbook is also available as an App).

They describe their beginning as “We began as a small group of investors and engineers who saw the potential to apply financial trading principles to the online betting world. With that in mind, we set out to make a difference in the industry by developing an online platform focused on honest, user-centred trading”.

Their growth has been rapid, it was in October 2010 that they passed £1m of lifetime trades (bets). In April 2012 they surpassed the £100m mark. By April 2014 that had grown to £500m and by May 2015 it was over £1Bn. In 2018 they had their largest ever traded market, just under £20m was matched on the England vs Sweden match.

In April 2017 the Financial Times’ gave them the 25th place of Europe Fastest Growing Companies. In September 2019 they have announced a ground-breaking deal to move into the US market, offering sports betting in Indiana and Colorado. Today, as of November 2019, they employ 104 people from 35 different countries.

Range of Sports and Markets - Good

Range of Sports: Smarkets covers a huge range of sports but highlights only the upcoming events and the major leagues. The full list of sports is placed on the left of the page which is making their classification into favorites easy. The two main sports, football and horse racing, are covered well. All UK and Irish horse racing meetings can be found 48 hours before their start, and the same goes for selected meetings from France, South Africa, USA and Australia. All the Irish and English football leagues are widely covered, as it’s the case for the Scottish football and all the major and secondary European Championships.

Range of Bets and Markets: Apart from football and horse racing, all other major sports such as cricket, tennis, golf, darts, motorsports and even other categories such as politics and entertainment are all included. The homepage shows all the current popular markets, and these are the ones that gather the biggest amounts wagered on them, so if you’re up for the most popular events they’ll be right there in the front line.

Football: The biggest market variety can be found for the Premier League and the Champions League matchups, with all the major European leagues coming right after them. A Premier League game most of the times has 50 markets to bet on more or less, including half time variations, asian handicaps for both outcomes and totalscorners, cards and more. One thing you won’t find there is players markets. Leagues of the lower end and minor profile events are also covered but with the basics only, match odds, over/under, correct scores and so onThese should be more than enough for most people though, as a Croatian First Division match is having 35 markets. Most markets go in-play but some lower leagues are not, it’s good that you will be warned before placing a bet if that is the case.

Horse Racing: Horse racing has the main markets you would expectboth win and place markets, as well as “to finish in the top X” though they’re limited in terms of perms and accumulators with them not being available automatically in the form of a bet slip. You can find even more of them available on major events such as the Cheltenham or The Grand National without them being standard. The big plus in Horse Racing is that each and every one is going in play also, giving us the chance to trade as the race goes on.

Others: The market depth varies between the rest of the sports but whatever it is that you want to bet on, most probably Smarkets will have it. In the unlikely event that there is something you want to bet on and is not available, it’s possible to contact the support and make a request for it.

Betting Limits: Smarkets is an exchange so your account will never be limited, which is one of their main advantages for anyone who wants to make a profit from online gambling. The amount per bet depends from the market depth itself, which is up from the players themselves, but this is most of the times more than enough no matter what’s your personal limitations. If your bet is not matched instantly then you can either wait, or go for lower odds to get it placed.

Live — normal

The live betting at Smarkets is easily one of the best in the business. Nearly every market goes in-play at kick-off, and when they do, you have the ability to trade on them from scratch or as hedge and possibly lock on returns on already existing positions.

By trading liabilities on the market, you can place more bets without needing to deposit more money, as long as your total liability doesn’t grow. Whilst it is disappointing that there is no live streaming, there are live statistics offered in each market page, showing not just current scores but also a real time description of the play.
